Great update. I started a similar journey as you in Austria back in 2022. Question, did you have the soil analyzed for macro and micro nutrient levels? It was a fascinating and helpful part for me as I planted my first vines.
How interesting! Where in Austria, what did you plant, and how is the processing going? We did do a soil analysis back in 2021 I believe. I need to ask my husband where he saved the results so I can share more of that here!
Kremstal, a few kilometers from the Wachau. I planted Chenin Blanc, Roussanne and Semillion. Austria has enough Gruner and Riesling ad I didn’t think I could do better than a family that has been at it for 18 generations. Plus, with climate change its good to try new varieties.
Yes, AGES in Austrian did the analysis for phosphorus, calcium, nitrogen, magnesium, pH, potassium, iron, etc. The potassium was unusually low, which inspired my thesis paper on creating a fertilizer with organic banana peels. The peels improved the soil, but also the plants had more leaves, thicker trunks and grew taller. The analysis also aided in the rootstock selection. Let me know when you are back in Austria and I'll give you the VIP tour. : )
All that improvement with banana peels! So interesting. I've used them in gardening so I guess it makes sense. What rootstocks did you end up selecting? I will definitely take you up on that. Austria is high up on my wine destination list. :)

Quite an adventure! When do you anticipate your first wine?
Next year! Hopefully this year we will have some fruit so we can start experimenting and getting an idea of what these sites have in store for us.
